A Maryland man is facing charges after allegedly stealing a kitten from a local adoption center — and then, kitten still in his arms, attempting to rob a bank next door.
Police say the man took the kitten, since named Magnolia, from the adoption center before walking straight into a nearby bank and allegedly attempting the robbery — with the kitten still tucked in his arms the entire time. No employees or customers were hurt, and the man was taken into custody shortly after. It is, without question, one of the least thought-through crimes on record.
Setting aside the obvious question of judgment, the more pressing detail is that Magnolia came out of this completely fine — which, frankly, is the only outcome that was ever going to matter.
Magnolia was recovered unharmed and is now back in the care of animal rescuers. Shelter staff describe her as healthy, eating well, and entirely unbothered by the ordeal — which, given that she was technically present for an attempted felony before she was old enough to be spayed, is a fairly impressive display of composure.
What makes the story land is less the crime itself than its sheer logistical absurdity: an adoption, a heist, and a police response, all inside the same ten minutes, with a kitten as the only witness who behaved reasonably throughout.
Local authorities have not released further details on the pending charges. Magnolia, for her part, is expected to be placed with a new adoptive family in the coming weeks — ideally one with a cleaner rap sheet than her first.
