An Australian dog named Scooter was rushed to an emergency vet after eating 2.4 pounds of gummy worms. She has no regrets whatsoever.
That is not a typo. Scooter got into 2.4 pounds — over a kilogram — of gummy worms, a quantity of candy that would put most adult humans on the floor. She was taken to an emergency clinic, where veterinary nurse manager Kate Wesche and her team made the call to induce vomiting. Scooter promptly brought the entire haul back up: all 2.4 pounds of it.
Her canine sibling Jada was also given the same treatment as a precaution and produced exactly one gummy worm. One. In the same household, faced with the same open bag of candy, one dog committed to the bit completely and the other grabbed a single snack and walked away. There are two kinds of dogs, and now we have lab results.
Wesche reported that Scooter had, and this is a direct quote, “clearly no regrets in her decision.” The clinic leaned all the way into it on social media, joking that “Scooter said the experience was 10/10 and she would do it again in a heartbeat.” Both dogs were given clean bills of health and sent home.
Here is the genuinely important part, because it is the reason this story has a happy ending instead of a tragic one: the gummy worms did not contain xylitol. That matters enormously. Xylitol — a sugar substitute found in many sugar-free candies, gums, and even some peanut butters — is extremely toxic to dogs, and even small amounts can cause life-threatening drops in blood sugar and liver failure.
Scooter got lucky on the ingredient list. The takeaway for everyone else: keep candy well out of reach, check labels for xylitol, and if your dog does raid the sweets, call a vet immediately rather than waiting to see what happens. Not every dog gets to give her ordeal a cheerful 10/10 review.
A dog ate 2.4 POUNDS of gummy worms 🐶🍬 Her sibling ate exactly one. The vet says Scooter had “no regrets.” The clinic joked she rated it “10/10, would do it again.” (Lucky for her: no xylitol. Always check.)
