A cat named Turtle ran out the door of a Connecticut home in March 2025. For 571 days, he was somewhere out there. Then someone posted about a cat in New York, and a microchip did the rest.
Turtle is a Nebelung, a long-haired gray cat. He was adopted from Tennessee by Kelly Moore’s daughter and lived with Moore in Greenwich, Connecticut.
One day Moore was hurrying out the door. She startled Turtle, and he bolted. He was gone before she could do anything about it.
The family called in help from Rocket Lost Pet Rescue, founded by Rocco Autero. Autero set up cameras near the house, and they showed Turtle coming back to visit every night. But he was afraid of cages, and he would not go near a trap.
Then the sightings stopped. The family feared the worst.
Months later, someone posted on social media about a cat found in Mamaroneck, New York, about 10 miles away. Autero suspected it was Turtle. A microchip scan confirmed it.
Getting him home took one more step. Turtle needed some coaxing before he would go into a carrier. Once he did, he rode back to Greenwich, and the news was reported on October 19.
Moore called the whole thing a series of unfortunate accidents, and she said she loves him so much. After 571 days, that seems like a reasonable thing to say.
Buster’s take: Nearly two years, ten miles, and one microchip. The chip did all the work, and the cat gets the headlines. Lucky’s take: He kept visiting the house every night! He never forgot home! That’s a good cat!
Missing for 571 days. Found 10 miles away. Confirmed by a microchip. Turtle the cat is finally home. 🐱❤️
